Pitman Arm - MI-PA-15688 MOOG

The pitman arm is the most important part that secures the steering trapezium to the gearbox. Such a structural element performs reciprocating rotation directly in a given sector, which depends directly on the nature of rotation of the corresponding steering shaft. The bipod has a rigid connection with the gear sector of the entire mechanism. Thanks to the bipod, the torque of the corresponding sector is converted into the movement of a longitudinal thrust.

The design of a pitman arm

The device of this structural element is quite simple. The pitman arm is a one-piece cast steel part with several heads - upper and lower. Each has its own hole. The shape of the part is curvilinear. It provides details the maximum durability at the minimum sizes. In addition, such a structural element ensures the correct distribution of forces.

The MOOG brand Pitman Arm is subjected to significant loads. They arise during the operation of vehicles. Therefore, over time, certain deformations occur in the arm. In the upper head, the slots wear out, in the lower head; a ball pin breaks the hole. This leads to the formation of gaps. The quality of the entire steering mechanism is deteriorating. Therefore, the entire steering mechanism, together with the pitman arm, must be periodically inspected, maintained, and repaired.
