In normal operation of the turbocharger, the pressure in the compressor is always higher than the pressure in the axle housing. Therefore, a breakthrough of the gas mixture from the turbine and the air compressed in the compressor is possible inside it, which, capturing the lubricant will pass through the drain oil pipeline into the engine oil sump. Therefore, the main task of this ring-shaped seal is to exclude the access of a gas flow with high pressure to the hot housing, and then to the car engine crankcase.

The usage of METZGER brand Seal Ring, turbo air hose

The sealing ring not only ensures the tightness of the unit, but also transfers thermal energy from the axis to the housing. Like most parts, this ring wears out naturally over time. In addition, damage to this element can occur for a number of other reasons. So, an abrupt stop leads to coking of such parts, and hence the violation of proper mobility, oil leakage into the turbine. Rings are also overgrown with soot during oil starvation. Untimely replacement of filters and oil, the use of low-quality lubricants eventually cause premature abrasion of the sealing rings.
