It protects the inner side of the brake disc from dirt and splashing water from under the wheels. As you know, from the left wheel to the right (and vice versa) there is the largest flow of mud and moisture. Therefore, the inner side of the brake disc is most exposed to the environment. Without a protective cover, the wear of brake discs and pads increases several times. This reduces the efficiency of the braking system as a whole.
