Expanding knuckles are installed in the brake mechanisms of the wheels of vehicles and are designed for automatic and manual adjustment of the gap between the shoes and the brake drum. The expanding knuckle is a shaft with two cams that serve to spread simultaneously two brake pads of the brake mechanism.

When braking, the rotation of the expander shaft causes the pads to be pressed against the brake drum. The profile of the expanding fist is performed along the Archimedes spiral or involute. Due to this, the total force acting from the side of the fist on the pads does not depend on the angle of the knuckle during the wear of the lining.

The usage of drum brake shaft

The expanding knuckle is a functional component of the drum-type brake mechanism. The purpose of the part is breeding and pressing the pads. The device is equipped with rotary cams. The part is fastened with brackets to the axle beam of the bridge parallel to it. These items are attached to brake shaft, which allows a correct operation of the braking system.
