As in other belt drives, the torque from the driving V-pulley to the belt and from it to the driven pulley is carried out by frictional forces. But in the V-belt transmission, the side surfaces of the belt are the workers. In this case, the contact patch is much larger than in a flat belt. This means more and the friction force and, consequently, the transmitted torque. To increase the contact patch, it is not necessary to increase the diameter of the pulley. It is wiser, from the point of view of the dimensions of the structure, to choose a pulley with a small diameter, but with several belts.
